TikTok Offers Viewers Control to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the company announced that it now features over 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a global rollout. This shift coincides with a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that approximately 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, factory-style content that is typically absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Overall, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the platform daily, making AI content a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the topic control setting in the application and choosing the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass current affairs, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies require content makers to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids harmful fake videos of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an AI-generated label to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This measure is intended to deter users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is furthermore launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and institutions to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations focused on training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, during discussion over proposals to lay off numerous safety staff in Britain. It is expected to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A company official stated that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most graphic content ahead of it gets reviewed by staff. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a extensive automated help is making a difference process content quickly.”
