Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism made him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
